Golden hour in Dallas, month by month
Almost every photograph I love was made in the same short stretch of the day: the last hour before the sun goes down, and the few minutes after. In England that light lingers. Summer evenings in Bristol go on for hours. In Dallas it comes and goes faster, and in summer it arrives very late.
So when couples ask what time their session should start, my answer always begins with the sun. This is the guide I use: sunset times through the year, what golden hour and blue hour actually are, how the clock change moves everything, and how to cope with a Texas summer.

What golden hour actually is
Golden hour is the time when the sun is low in the sky, just before sunset or just after sunrise. The light travels through more air, so it is softer, warmer and comes in from the side rather than from above.
That matters more than any lens or edit. At noon in Dallas the sun is high and hard. It puts dark shadows in the eyes and makes everyone squint. An hour before sunset, the same place looks completely different: skin glows, grass lights up from behind and shadows stretch out long and gentle.
Definitions vary, and the length changes with the season, so I do not promise an exact sixty minutes. I plan around sunset itself and work backwards.

Sunset times in Dallas by month
These are approximate sunset times for the 15th of each month in 2026, in local clock time. They come from a secondary source and change by a minute or two each day, so check the exact time for your date with a sun calculator or timeanddate.com before you go.
| Month (15th) | Sunset, approx | |---|---| | January | 5:44pm | | February | 6:12pm | | March | 7:35pm | | April | 7:57pm | | May | 8:19pm | | June | 8:36pm | | July | 8:36pm | | August | 8:12pm | | September | 7:33pm | | October | 6:54pm | | November | 5:25pm | | December | 5:22pm |
As a rule of thumb, I start a one hour session about an hour before sunset, and a longer session a little earlier so we have time to move.

The clock change on 1 November 2026
US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 2am. Texas observes it. Overnight, sunset moves about an hour earlier on the clock.
This catches people out every year. A session booked for 6pm on 31 October is a golden hour session. The same time a week later is nearly dark. If your date is anywhere near the change, tell me early and I will set the time for you.
In spring the clocks go forward again, and sunset jumps later. That is why the March time in the table is so much later than February.
Blue hour
Blue hour is the time just after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon and the sky turns deep blue and soft pink. It usually lasts somewhere between fifteen and forty minutes, depending on the season and where you are.
I love it, and I ask most couples to stay for it. The light is very soft and even, and the sky behind you does something different every night. The city lights come on in Uptown and downtown. It is also the moment the heat finally lets go.
It is quick, though. Blue hour is not a time to walk to a new spot. We pick our last place before the sun goes, and stay there.

The summer problem
Dallas summers are hot. Normal highs in June are around 91°F, and in July and August around 96°F, with lows in the mid seventies. The middle of the afternoon is not a time for photographs.
Here is how I handle it.
Start late. In June and July sunset is around 8:30pm. We start about an hour before, when the worst heat has passed.
Choose shade and water. Turtle Creek Park and Thanks-Giving Square stay cooler than open fields. Arbor Hills is beautiful but very exposed, so in summer we keep it short.
Come ready. Arrive dressed, bring water, and plan short walks. Highland Park also asks that nobody changes in cars, so it is worth sorting outfits at home.
Consider sunrise. It is cooler, quieter and the parks are empty. It also means a very early alarm. Some couples love it.

Season by season
January and February. Early sunsets and cold evenings. The light is clean and low all afternoon. Bring a coat for between frames.
March and April. The clocks change, spring arrives and wildflowers come out. Storms can roll in quickly, so we watch the forecast.
May to September. Late sunsets and real heat. Short sessions, shade and water.
October and November. My favourite months. Warm afternoons, cooler evenings, and the clock change in the middle. Fall colour usually peaks in the second half of November. More on that in fall engagement photos in Dallas.
December. The earliest sunsets of the year. Lovely for Christmas card photos, and you will be home for dinner.

What about cloudy days?
I do not have a reliable Dallas cloud figure to give you, so I will just tell you what I see. A thin, even cloud acts like a giant softbox. Skin looks lovely and muted colour looks rich, but you will not get a golden glow or a pink sky. Heavy cloud makes the light fade earlier than the sunset time suggests, so I start a little sooner.
I almost never cancel for grey. I only move a date for rain or storms.

How I plan a session around the light
- I check the exact sunset for your date and your location.
- I set the start time so the last frames land just before or just after sunset.
- I plan the route so the open, sunlit spot comes last, and any shady spot comes first.
- I leave room for blue hour if you are happy to stay.
- I check the forecast the day before and message you if anything changes.
If you are picking a place too, the best photo locations in Dallas notes the best light at each one.
