Behind the camera

About

Hello

I am Reuben Oliver. I bought my first camera at twelve and carried that old Nikon on every family holiday across England and Europe until it more or less stopped leaving my hands.

I grew up in Bristol and went professional in 2024 shooting food in England for Michelin star restaurants alongside some of the best chefs in the country, and those kitchens taught me how to move quickly and stay out of the way and find the one frame in a room that is far too busy to ever be posed.

Now I photograph weddings in Texas, and I photograph them like an Englishman.

What I am after is not the look of a film stock. It is the look of an old English picture. Skies that take up two thirds of the frame. Two people small in the land. Green and grey and cream and oxblood instead of the bright warm palette everybody else is handing you. I grew up on The Lord of the Rings and I still think about how patient and beautiful the colour is in it, and that is the colour I am chasing.

So the work is a hybrid. The soul of film, shot on a modern body with cinema glass and graded by hand, so you get all of the character and none of the unpredictability.

How I work

I will arrange you, and I want to be honest about that up front.

The English portrait painters never pretended their subjects had been caught unawares, and neither do I. I find the light and the sky and the place, I put you in it, and then I stop talking and let you be with each other. You are not being watched from across a field and you are not being marched through a shot list either. The frame is built. What happens inside it is yours.

The rest of the day I am quiet. No stiff line-ups, no dragging you out of your own wedding, and whatever light is genuinely there is the light we use.

Why weddings

A wedding is the most joyful and most expressive day of a couple's life and I do not believe there is a better thing in the world to point a camera at.

I am a follower of Jesus and an ordained pastor, and I believe marriage is a picture of the love Christ has for his church, so being invited into a day like that is an honour I will never take lightly. I love people and I love hearing where someone is in their life and what they have walked through to get to that aisle. I am not there to be the story. I am there to serve you, for a full wedding day or a couples shoot or whatever else you have in mind.

Where this is going

The measure of it is simple. In five years I want you to open your gallery again and say we looked beautiful. Not fashionable, and not of the moment. Beautiful five years on, the way a painting is.
